August 1, 2024 — OWOX Extension for Google Sheets. Visualize Data with ‘Automated Pivots & Charts’ Feature to Save Your Time

How much time do you spend visualizing data in Google Sheets from scratch? 1 minute? 5 minutes? Or more? You create new charts from scratch again and again… It’s so boring. The OWOX BI extension will help you stop wasting time on your charting routine and get automated charts in seconds, not minutes. And as a bonus, you’ll also get a pivot table (truly magic!).

Today is the day when Data Analysts, Business Users, and Decision-makers will start to love building charts and pivots with the OWOX extension for Google Sheets. We take a bold first step towards data visualization in Google Sheets and introduce a new feature, “Automated Pivots & Charts,” that allows you to:

  • Use any data from your Sheet in Google Sheets. No need for BigQuery or permissions. Just install the extension and you’re good to go.
  • Click-click, and automatically get your pivots & charts to find insights. Literally, it works as simply as possible.
  • Easily adjust created charts for your needs – change dimensions and metrics with a single click.
  • Refresh-friendly. All charts keep working after the data source is updated with new data.

We built “Automated Pivots & Charts” with user scenarios deeply in mind. Data analysts will save time on the initial report setup. Business users will speed up ad hoc analysis to get valuable insights quickly. Decision-makers will get up-to-date visualizations that automatically update with new data, ensuring they always have the most accurate information at hand.

How It Works

Step 1. Install the Extension from the official marketplace.

Step 2. Open Your Google Sheet Document. You can use any data in the sheet, even if it hasn’t been imported from BigQuery. For the best experience, make sure your data includes at least one Number column and one Text column, or one Number column and one Date column. Ideally, use all these columns, as shown in our demo dataset. Also, ensure that the first row in the sheet contains column titles to generate clear labels in the charts.

Step 3. Go to the menu “Extensions -> OWOX: Reports, Charts & Pivots -> Visualize current sheet.” Wait until the extension reads the data schema. Optionally check the columns you want to add to charts and specify their content type (Number, Text, Date). Click “Generate Pivots & Charts.”

Step 4. You’re done! The extension creates a new sheet with processed data and charts. Everything is ready!

Charts

Each chart is easily customizable. On the left side, the first column is reserved for different configuration options in each section. You can hide this column or leave it open. Here’s a description of each type of chart you will have:

Line Chart

The first section features a fundamental chart type—a line chart that shows changes in metrics over time. You can specify which metric you want to display on the chart by selecting it in the table below the chart. In the left column, if your data source has more than one date, you can change the date field. Here’s a quick tip for working with this line chart: to adjust the date range, simply edit the formula in cell D21 and set the LIMIT to your desired value. Customize your line chart to suit your needs and uncover valuable data insights.

Pie Charts

The second section contains up to three pie charts, each showing how parts relate to a whole. Adjustments are available for choosing the number of rows as a pattern: TOP [10] entities. You will get up to 3 pie charts depending on the number of Text type columns in your source data.

Bar Chart (Stacked Column Chart)

In the third section, you’ll see a Bar chart, or as it's named here—a Stacked column chart. It is ideal for showing how multiple categories or elements contribute to an overall total. By dividing a column vertically, you can illustrate the breakdown of a whole into its separate components. Adjustments are available in the left column as a pattern: TOP [10] entities by [TEXT TYPE COLUMN] with the highest number of [NUMBER TYPE COLUMN] by [DATE TYPE COLUMN].

Pivot Table

Finally, the last section contains the pivot table, which is automatically generated as follows:

  • At the first level of granularity will be the field that has the least number of unique values (but greater than 1).
  • At the second level of granularity will be the field that has the largest number of unique values.
